Why Librarianship?

My career at a public library started in December 1998.
I was 40, and had just returned to New York from Trinidad and
was sure that I did not want to continue my career
in Advertising. I was hired by the library to run
a Business Center but that flopped. The director at
the time discovered that I was a seasoned graphic designer
and a position was created for me as the Library Graphics Specialist. I am the first person to hold this position at my job.
(I was also the page supervisor for about nine years)
I was provisional for 5 years before Albany
created a test for my position. In order to
keep my job, I had to place in the top three which I did.
There were a lot of challenges and that prompted me to
go back to school at 50, (Fibromyalgia and all) and get my Masters Degree in librarianship. So far I have no regrets about my decision. My job title is now Librarian Graphics Specialist.
